Crieff is a market town north of Stirling and west of Perth. It boasts Scotland’s oldest lending library, the Innerpeffray Library, which was built in 1680. Its position between the highlands and central Scotland made it an important centre for trade and politics for hundreds of years. It has a long history as a tourist destination, with a famous spa that is still in operation.
For hundreds of years, Crieff served as a market for black highland cattle. At one time, there were 10 head of cattle for each town resident. This trade brought together highlanders, people from central Scotland and the English, Crieff was at one time a dangerous town. Thieves often came into conflict with drovers, and murders were not uncommon. In fact, Crieff was at one time known for its six gallows, which were on a hill and visible from the road.
