Dundee was founded in medieval times, and it was once a walled city with gates at East Port and West Port. However, the original town was completely destroyed in the wars of the 15th and 16th centuries.
Dundee came back as a textile manufacturing town in the 1700s. Wool processing was already a traditional industry, but jute and linen became important with the construction of large mills in the 1700s. Eventually, Dundee evolved into a manufacturer of jute sailcloth, treated with whale oil provided by the city’s whaling fleet. In the late 18th century, marmalade manufacturing started in Dundee, and in the early twentieth century, publishing became an important industry. This completed the development of Dundee’s traditional ‘jute, jam and journalism’ economy.
Today, Dundee is a hub for retail, government services, financial services and high tech companies. Residents of the city and the nearby towns and villages live in flats, terraced houses and detached houses, some of which are new, while others are centuries old.
