Timber Buildings Falkirk

Historic Falkirk

Falkirk is an ancient town, with a piece of the Antonine Wall and buildings from as far back as medieval times. The name "Falkirk" originally meant "speckled church," but it seems that the church it was named after is long gone.

Falkirk dates at least to Roman times. It has long been a centre for local trade, and it was known for its manufacturing industries in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Many of the red pillar-style postboxes that can still be found in most British cities were built in Falkirk.

Today, Falkirk's economy is based on trade and services rather than on heavy industry. It's a market town once again. It's also a commuter town for the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Falkirk is located midway between the two cities and is well connected by public transport and by motorways.
